Centipedes

  • What are centipedes?

Centipedes are easily recognized by their many legs and can be found throughout Pennsylvania as well as across the entire United States.  Although the word centipedes actually means “100 legs”, these pests only have one pair of legs per segment on their bodies and the number of legs on a centipede actually ranges from somewhere between 15-177 legs.  The body of a centipede is long and flat and ranges from 1/8th of an inch to 6 inches in length.  They are yellowish to dark brown in color and may have dark stripes or markings.  Unlike millipedes, centipedes can move very fast and can live up to 6 years.

  • Why do I have them?Millipedes control

Centipedes are nocturnal pests that prefer to live outdoors.  They will occasionally make their way indoors through cracks, crevices and other openings, where they can be found in the dark, damp places of your home including basements, crawl spaces, closets or any other place they may have access to other insects.

  • Are they dangerous?

Centipedes do have the ability to bite, but the bite of a centipede has no long-lasting effects and feels similar to a “bee sting”.

  • How do I get rid of centipedes?

Getting rid of centipedes can be very difficult because of their elusive nature and their ability to hide in small cracks and crevices throughout your home.  A Raifsnider professional will design a customized centipede control program that fits the specific needs of your property, with the goal of eliminating all of these nocturnal pests.

  • Can I do it myself?

Centipedes are not a pest many homeowners have much luck eliminating on their own.  Many do-it-yourself remedies to rid your property of centipedes simply do not work as the materials they use are not effective and can actually make your centipede problem worse.  Remember – if misused or mixed improperly, do-it-yourself pesticides can be very dangerous to people, pets or plants.

  • Is the treatment safe?

The pest professionals at Raifsnider's l will first correctly identify a problem with centipedes in your home or business, and then create a treatment plan that will eliminate your pest problem quickly and in an environmentally responsible manner.  Before any treatments begin, our inspectors will consult with you regarding your children, pets, and gardens and then based on your current situation; they will then customize a treatment plan specifically for you.

  • How soon can you come?

Raifsnider's  is committed to helping you as soon as possible.  In most cases, we can respond the same or very next day.
